Crops

How much land was sown, how much was harvested and how much each hectare gave, for 52 crops in every district, with the State record back to 1965-66.

What this page shows, in plain words

What it shows

For 52 crops: how much land was sown (area, in hectares), how much was harvested (production) and how much each hectare gave (yield), for each of the 38 districts. For about 19 principal crops there is also the State record back to 1965-66.

Units

Area is in hectares, production in tonnes and yield in kg per hectare, except Cotton (bales of 170 kg of lint), Coconut (lakh nuts, nuts per hectare), Sugarcane (tonnes of cane) and Arecanut (cured nuts). The unit is always shown beside the figure.

Irrigated and unirrigated

Area is split into irrigated and unirrigated land. Production and yield are given by season (Kharif, Rabi or all seasons) where the report gives them.

Notes and checks

  • As printed. Every figure is shown as the report prints it. We do not recalculate areas, production or yields. The only calculation on the page is the percentage change between the last two years of the State series, and the length of bars and lines.
  • Not reported. Where the report prints a dash or leaves a cell empty, we show “not reported” (a blank in the downloads), never zero. A change shown as n/a means the report has no figure for the year before.
  • District names. The official names from our district list are used. The report spells three of them differently (Sivagangai, Tiruchirapalli, Villupuram).
  • Rounding. District yields in the report are rounded, so district area × yield can differ a little from printed production.
  • Checks. Irrigated + unirrigated area equals the total in every row but one (8,502 rows; the exception is listed in Known Gaps). Every crop and measure has all 38 districts and the State. The last year of the State series equals the State row of the district tables, and State area × yield matches production for nearly all crops. The differences found are in Known Gaps.

Crops, State series since 1965-66: area, production and yield, Tamil Nadu

State area, production and yield of 19 principal crops, plus total foodgrains, total cereals and total pulses, for every agricultural year from 1965-66 (Table IX-C).

Figures are exactly as the report prints them. Sugarcane production is in terms of gur up to 2002-03 and in terms of cane from 2003-04, so its series is not comparable across that year; the unit column gives the basis of each figure.
