What this page shows, in plain words
The Consumer Price Index (CPI)
Every month, government staff record the prices of about 350 things households buy, from rice and milk to rent, bus fares and school fees, in markets and villages across the State. The CPI combines them into one number, weighted by how much families actually spend on each.
Index: the price level
Prices in 2024 are set to 100. An index of 110 means the same basket costs about 10% more than it did on average in 2024.
Inflation: the yearly change
Inflation is how much higher prices are than in the same month a year earlier. 5% means what cost ₹100 then costs about ₹105 now. It is published from January 2026, a year after this series began.
Provisional figures
Each month is first published as provisional and revised a month later. We update the figures when that happens and keep a record of every change.

About these figures
- Source. Consumer Price Index (Rural, Urban, Combined), base 2024=100, compiled by the National Statistics Office, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India. Read from the official MoSPI data service (eSankhyiki) and checked against the monthly press release on the Press Information Bureau website.
- Only official figures. Every index and inflation rate on this page is as published. We do not calculate our own rates.
- Coverage. January 2025 to September 2026. The series with base 2024 replaced the older series (base 2012) from January 2026; the two are not mixed here.
- Checks. Before publishing we check that every month and every area is present, that indices are valid, and that each official inflation rate agrees with the official indices for the two months it compares.
- Revisions. When MoSPI revises a figure we have published, the old and new values are listed in the revisions file below.
