How each district’s land is used: forest, farmland, fallow, non-agricultural uses and more, in hectares and as a share of the district.
What this page shows, in plain words
What it shows
How each district’s land is used: forest, barren land, non-agricultural uses, cultivable waste, pastures, tree crops, fallow land and the area sown, in hectares (ha).
Shares
Each class also shows its share of the district’s area and the district’s share of the State’s area in that class, as printed.
Sown area
Net area sown counts each field once. Gross area sown counts fields sown more than once each time.

Notes and checks
- As printed. Every figure is shown as the report prints it. We do not recalculate averages, deviations, shares or totals. Bars and segments are drawn in proportion to the printed figures.
- District names. The pages use the official names from our district list. The report spells three of them differently (Sivagangai, Tiruchirapalli, Villupuram); the downloads use the official names too.
- Not reported. Where the report prints a dash or leaves a cell empty, we show “not reported” (a blank in the downloads), never zero.
- Checks. For all 38 districts and the State row: the nine land-use classes add up to the geographical area (within 0.1%), gross area sown equals net area sown plus area sown more than once, the printed % of district area matches area ÷ geographical area, and the districts add up to the State row (within 3 ha of rounding). There are no failures.
- Non-agricultural uses. The report prints the total and four parts (water logged land, social forestry, land under still water, others). The four parts do not add up to the total, so the report does not show every part. Shown as printed.
- Percentages. % of district area is the class against the district’s geographical area. % of state total is the district’s share of the State’s area in that class. Gross area sown can be above 100% of the district’s area, because land sown more than once is counted each time.
